Boston Common

Boston Common is one of the major tourist attractions of Boston. This charming park is one of the oldest public parks of Boston. This Boston Park occupies an area of 50 acres. Boston Common is bounded by the following streets:

  • Boylston Street
  • Park Street

The history of Boston Common goes back to 1634 when the area of the Common was known as a common pasture. Boston Common was also used for military purposes and public hangouts. During 1817 the gallows were removed and cattle grazing was stopped. From then onwards Boston Common has been used as a public park. This park in Boston is used for recreational purposes. The open, vast pastoral ground attracts a great number of tourists to this park at Boston. The Boston Garden is adjacent to the Public Garden.

Boston Common is can boast of a number of magnificent historical monuments like,
  • The Parkman Bandstand: It was built in honor of George F. Parkman who donated a large sum of money for the maintenance of the park.
  • Soldiers and Sailors Monument: It was built in honor of Civil War Troops in 1877.
  • Robert Gould Shaw Memorial: This is also in honor of Civil War Troops.
  • The Brewer Fountain: This bronze mountain adds to the charm of Boston Common. It was donated by Gardner Brewer and is decorated with mythical figures of Neptune, Amphitrite, Galatea and Acis.
  • Central Burying Ground: This one of the oldest graveyards of Boston.
Boston Common is also the starting point of the Freedom Trail of Boston, which is a popular walking tour along the historic landmarks of Boston.
